Enabling Hearing: Cochlear Implants: A Story

August 04, 2021

After experiencing diminishing hearing, Radha completely lost the ability to hear.

An initial diagnosis confirmed that Radha's ears were experiencing difficulty in processing sound waves in the ear, making her the apt candidate for Cochlear Surgery.

Cochlear Surgery: What Happens

Radha was admitted to the hospital in the morning. Post checking her vitals, a surgery was performed to make a small incision near her ear and insert the cochlear implant. A few hours later Radha was discharged.

The incision site took three weeks to heal, post which the implant was activated. Although Radha could sense the presence of sound, she wasn't able to make complete sense of it, and consulted an audiologise to help her.

With the help of the audiologist, Radha was able to train her brain to better assess and process sounds. Within months she was able to process sounds and partake in conversations comfortably!

Advantages of Cochlear Implants:

  • Minimally invasive solution
  • Permanent life-long solution for some types of hearing loss.
