Mucor-mycosis: Are you at risk?

July 05, 2021

Dubbed the 'black fungus' this disease-causing organism, once considered relatively harmless is a huge cause of concern.

Some states in India have reported over 500 cases of mucor-mycosis till date, and this number is set to grow.

The good news is, if you are at the risk of catching this fungus, you can prevent catching it by avoiding dusty places, keeping away from damp and dusty places and ensuring that you take your medicines regularly.

Here are some risk factors associated with mucor-mycosis that one should know, and mitigate:

  • Diabetes or High Blood Sugar Levels are often associated with poor immunity. A majority of patients who experience mucor-mycosis have uncontrolled sugar levels. Keeping one’s sugar levels under control by eating a low-carbohydrate diet, partaking in moderate exercise and taking insulin if necessary, goes a long way in helping people beat mucor-mycosis.
  • The second most important factor that influences mucor-mycosis is hypertension. If you frequently experience bouts of elevated blood pressure, ensure that you consume a low-salt diet and keep your blood sugar levels under control.
  • People who are taking steroids and immunosuppressants on a daily basis are more prone to contracting the fungus and should talk to their healthcare provider about optimizing their medications.
  • Everyone should ensure that they take all their medicine doses at the right time, and complete medicine courses prescribed by the doctor, even if they feel well.

Your health lies in your hands. Some caution can help you keep away from this dreaded disease!
