Vertigo: A Ready Reckoner

January 03, 2022

Have you ever climbed to the top of a high-rise building and felt your head spinning when you look down? Some people constantly feel that spinning feeling.

Vertigo is defined as a sensation of spinning and dizziness caused due to problems in the brain, inner ear, or sensory nerve pathway. We may confuse vertigo with fear of heights or body weakness. This is because vertigo can occur while a person looks down from a huge store yard building too. So, let us discuss the symptoms of Vertigo.

5 Major symptoms of vertigo –

  • Balance loss - This usually occurs when you suddenly try to stand from a sleeping position.
  • Fullness in the ear, buzzing or ringing ears or hearing loss – Infection in middle or inner ear may result in such condition.
  • Constant Vomiting & Nausea, Light-headedness, increased sweating & headache.
  • Motion sickness – This usually occurs while travelling. Our sensing parts of the body eyes, muscles, joints and ear sends motion signals to brain. When these parts send conflict signals, brain gets confused whether the body is idle or moving resulting in vertigo.
  • Problem focussing the eye or Involuntary eye movement – As the head spin around and feel dizzy, the eyes start making involuntary movements resulting in double, limited or blurred vision.

Based on the severity of this condition, one may suffer from high temperature or ear damage too. Vertigo can be treated with self-care if it is not too frequent. Regular exercise, cautious neck movements and slow walking are some of the remedies. However, frequent vertigo should be consulted & treated by a general physician or an ENT specialist.
