Allergic Rhinitis: Symptoms and Treatments

January 04, 2023

Allergic rhinitis, also known as "hay fever" is an allergic reaction of the nose most often triggered by airborne allergens such as pollen or dust. Allergies cause a variety of symptoms that can range from mild to severe and can significantly impact a person's quality of life. This article will explain the common symptoms of allergic rhinitis and discuss the various treatments available.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of allergic rhinitis is sneezing, which can be accompanied by a runny nose or nasal congestion. Other symptoms may include itchy eyes, an itchy throat or ears, fatigue, headaches and/or a sore throat. In some cases, allergies may even cause asthma symptoms such as wheezing and/or shortness of breath.

Treatments

The most effective treatment for allergic rhinitis is prevention – reducing exposure to the allergens that trigger your symptoms. This can include using air purifiers, avoiding certain activities during times of high pollen counts, and taking steps to reduce exposure to dust mites.

For some people, avoiding allergens is not enough, so they require additional treatments. These can include antihistamines or corticosteroid nasal sprays which help reduce inflammation in the nose. In more severe cases, immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended.

Allergic rhinitis can be uncomfortable and disruptive, but the good news is that it can generally be managed with some lifestyle changes, medications, and/or immunotherapy. It is important to consult a doctor if you have severe symptoms or have difficulty managing your allergies. With proper treatment, you can control your allergy symptoms and enjoy a better quality of life.
