February 04, 2022

Acute Otitis Media is diagnosed as an acute middle ear effusion/ middle ear inflammation. The major symptoms of Otitis Media are pain, fever and irritation. It can occur due to respiratory infections, cold, cough, fever and sore throat. Children are more prone to Otitis Media compared to adults, although adults can also get affected in rare cases.

What is Otitis Media?

An otitis media is a malfunction of the Eustachian tube located between the middle ear and throat. Eustachian tube is the equalizer between outer and middle ears. The obstruction of fluid flow from the middle ear causes an accumulation of fluid in the eardrum. When the bacteria and viruses multiply in this fluid, it leads to acute pain and distress in the ear

Some of the major causes of Otitis Media Ear Infection are

  • A smoke-filled environment
  • Immune system weakness
  • Bottles are fed to kids lying down
  • There is no breastfeeding
  • Living in an unhygienic environment
  • Inheritances from family members

Treatment for Otitis Media -

Depending on the age and severity of the infection, ear infections may require different treatments. Initially, pain and fever are treated with medication. If the fluid starts growing bacteria, an antibiotic is prescribed depending on the severity and age.

A tube may be used for immediate relief if the ear infection is persistent, recurring, or if antibiotics are unable to resolve the infection. The tubes are also used for children who have difficulty developing speech and language.
